The compass appears to be off by 40 or more degrees. Can I recalibrate the compass?
The compass in XRX is calibrated at the factory prior to shipment, however this calibration does not always work for every aircraft. If you experience a compass error of more than 20 to 40 degrees, or notice dramatic jumps in heading, you can easily re-calibrate the compass. In the admin menu, the first page is the compass calibration. Please read these instructions carefully as this will directly affect the azimuth information shown.
1. Make sure the unit is on for more than 30 seconds (preferably one minute for stabilization). 2. Position the XRX on your instrument panel where you plan to use it during flight, and check that it is level to the ground. 3. Point your aircraft so that the back of the XRX faces DUE NORTH (LCD display (facing you) faces south). 4. Press and hold MUTE, then DOWN (at the same time), then release. This selects ADMIN MENU). 5. Press the UP arrow button, and wait while the compass self-calibrates. 6. Press MENU to skip through the additional admin pages until you reach the traffic page again.
The compass will not need to be re-calibrated if you use it in the same location from flight to flight, however if you fly more than 2500 miles NORTH or SOUTH, you may need to re-calibrate the compass.
Note: A correctly calibrated compass will be within 20 degrees of your magnetic compass. This slight variance is normal, and does not effect the azimuth shown because XRX uses the change rate, not the actual heading for its algorithms. If you notice sudden swings from 40 to 140, or 360 to 180, this is a good indication that your compass needs to be calibrated.
