REMOTE FIXED XRX WITH SEPARATE ANTENNA? 3 Years, 11 Months ago

We have recently refitted our RV8 panel on the basis that the XRXi would be a remote unit, not requiring panel space. It seems that is a missunderstanding! We have an antenna located in the fibreglass fin top especially for the Zaon unit, and two moving maps to choose from to send the signal to. So..... can the existing XRX be remotely located and powered up automatically (or switched separately) and fed from the remote antenna in the fin cap, sending the signal to a moving map? Your guidance appreciated Zaon.

All development on the XRXi has been suspended indefinitely. The XRX will remain in the portable only category.

Yes, the current portable XRX can be modified to automatically turn on when power is applied. However as to the remote antenna, no the XRX can not receive signal from any type of external antenna. That said several of our customers mount the XRX in other places of their plane, and run the data to a moving map or GPS.

So on the basis that we will want to remote mount,do you or any of your forum readers have any suggestions for location in an RV8. I don't think it will fit in the top of the fibreglass fin (where we have what was to be the remote aerial) . I guess an alternative would be to mount behind rear seat, above the luggage locker, but getting level will be difficult. Also likely to suffer from damage from seat belts when getting access to the luggage locker. How important is getting the unit exactly level? What type of fixings would there be to the base of the unit.

I think, and I don't work for Zaon, so take this for what it's worth, almost nothing, that the XRX antenna must have a metallic-free view, as if on a spam can glare shield. It also must be as level as possible and oriented "straight ahead," or at a certain 45 degree angle. It also does not accept an outside antenna. I've been down this path, actually bought an XRX but returned it, and am now waiting for the panel mount. Given the answer at first was that no new development was happening with the XRX, this leads me to believe that the panel mount is the focus, at least that is my hope. Sad that Zaon cannot simply answer your question.
