Garmin 496/XRX interface 4 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 1
I just got my XRX back, from Zaon, after getting a software update. I also purchased the Garmin 496 interface cable, but have a few questions. It appears, from the provided documentation, that traffic alerts will pop-up on the GPS map screen. Is the traffic alert going to be on any screen I am using or only the map view? Will I still be able to get the voice alerts as well? Will your traffic screen conflict with or prevent my terrain alert pop-up from functioning - if they are both alerting at the same time?

i would also like to know the answers to these questions plus one more: from the 396/496 interface setup, when you connect to a garmin unit it appears you lose this display on the xrx. true or false? if so, you lose the ability to show traffic to the copilot if the unit is placed on the copilots side of the glarescreen.

I see from the installation instructions, that the loss of traffic display, on the unit, is normal. However, like Pete, it would be really nice if the co-pilot could have an independent traffic reference (perhaps it is not possible when configured to output to the Garmin instead of the screen). I must admit, it will be nice to move one unit (I currently have the 496 & XRX on my side) over to the co-pilots side.

I agree. When they started these forums, tech support & sales were on top of customer queries. I am not sure what has happened, but potential customers may be reticent to purchase a product if they get the perception that ‘after the sale support’ is difficult to obtain.

First, our apologies for the delay in replying to forum questions. We have been busy with a complete web overhaul, including these forums, and are now able to devote much more time to responding.

Second, our new website includes extensive information on third-party integration, including with Garmin and exactly how the XRX information is displayed. This info can be found at http://www.zaon.aero/integration.

To answer your question, the Garmin process traffic the exact same way it does for TIS info. Any traffic will be displayed on the moving map. Alerts will show up in a pop-up screen, regardless of which page you're looking at (similar to terrain alerts).

As for voice alerts, you have a few different options. The Garmin generates a female alert that can be heard by connecting to the 1/8" audio out jack or hard wiring into the audio leads contained in the power cable. In addition, all of the standard XRX alerts can be used via the 1/8" out jack on the XRX. Both units will also emit a beep. The XRX breaks alerts into two categories, advisories and alerts, with corresponding audio. The Garmin only has one (alert).

The XRX does blank out the screen so that the additional load on the processor to repackage the information and send through the data port is balanced by not having to refresh the display. The XRX, in a sense, becomes something like the XM "puck"... a receiver-only up on the dash.
