Detecting aircraft on the ground with XRX 4 Years, 5 Months ago Karma: 1
If I use a Zaon battery pack with XRX, can I walk around the airport and see aircraft?

While XRX will detect traffic, the bearing may be erratic. XRX was design to sit upon the top of an instrument panel which gives it a partial ground plane, which helps in the directional properties of the antennas.

The antenna in XRX requires a dielectric material of greater value below it than above. Dielectric material is an insulator which, in this situation, means a material other than air that slows the speed of the RF wave down as it passes below and around the antenna structure. This principle helps this type of antenna design cancel the signal on the reverse side of each antenna, thus allowing better directional capability. Your hand alone is not large enough to create a noticeable effect, however an instrument panel is.
