The quick way to tell if the 496 is receiving data is to look at the setup menu / interface tab and make sure it still reads "Data Available" in the Status field. Other than that, the Garmin unit does not provide for an alert if this data is lost. Once you have gone to this menu / tab, you can return to it quickly by pressing the menu button twice.
