Hard-wiring the Audio 4 Years, 8 Months ago Karma: 1
How do I hardwire the Audio into my audio panel?

First, find out if your audio system as an AUX IN or other MISC input. If it does, some have the option of "unmuted" or "muted". Unmuted means while ATC talks, so does XRX. Muted means it will cut when you need to have a conversation with ATC. We recommend the latter.

Mono System

More than likely, this is the type of system you have. If your standard headset plug (the larger, 1/4" jack that you plug into the aircraft) has a tip and a shaft (only 1 black ring), you probably have a mono system. If you see two black rings, and your headset has a stereo/mono switch set to stereo, you have a stereo system (see below).

Typically a mono audio system will have two inputs, HI and LO. To connect the XRX audio output, you will need a 1/8” MONO phono jack with sufficient leads to connect to an audio input. The two wires from the 1/8” connector should be stripped and tinned.

You will need to configure the audio switches. (you will need a small screwdriver to remove the access door on the bottom) There are two switch groups. “A” and “B” we are only concerned with “A” and the first 4 switches. All the other switches are related to other functions, and should not be changed at this time.

The best method for Mono stereo connection is the following switch configuration:

*
GROUP “A”
o
Switch #1: ON
Switch #2: OFF
Switch #3: ON
Switch #4: OFF

Next, plug the 1/8” audio plug into the INPUT of the XRX (the audio plug next to the power connector is the OUTPUT) We will use the INPUT for hardwiring to an aircraft audio system because this allows for ground isolation. This may seem backwards, but it results in better audio quality.

Stereo System

For a stereo system the wiring is the same as Mono EXCEPT the following:

* Use a Stereo 1/8” connector and ensure tip/ring/shell wire colors are properly connected (tip = left, ring = right, shell = common)
* Switch settings:
o GROUP “A”
+ Switch #1: ON
Switch #2: OFF
Switch #3: ON
Switch #4: ON
* 1/8” connector goes to OUTPUT on XRX (located closest to power connector)
