BendixKingHeader.jpgSee what you've been missing! Get traffic information on your Bendix/King AV8OR Handheld, Vision 3D or Horizon 3D straight from your XRX and without the need for TIS coverage. Zaon and Bendix/King have teamed up to provide highly-accurate traffic information overlayed on the same screen you've been looking at.

Hooking up an XRX to your AV8OR Handheld/Vision 3D/Horizon 3D is simple and easy. The XRX has a built-in serial port and AV8OR interface protocols that, when connected to the AV8OR serial port, provide traffic information that the AV8OR can read and display on the moving map and in other ways.

CONNECTION TO AN EXTERNAL TRAFFIC SOURCE

ZAON XRX - SERIAL OR BLUETOOTH SETUP

Configuration of the Zaon XRX:

To configure the Zaon XRX,perform the following steps:

  • Using the XRX AIRCRAFT menu, set the aircraft type as appropriate for your aircraft as described in the ZAON users Manual.
  • Using the XRX RANGE menu, set the horizontal detection range to 6 nm radius.
  • Using the XRX ALTITUDE menu, set the altitude limitation to 2500 ft.
  • Using the XRX COM menu, set the third party communications to PROFILE 1.
    • Verify the XRX configuration switches are set as described in the XRX Users Guide for third-party output.
  • Press Mute to return to the traffic screen. This screen will show “PROFILE 1”.
  • Set the configuration switches on the Zaon XRX to the correct configuration to use the RS-232 output.  If using BlueTooth, then there is no need to set the correct configuration.

Configuration of AV8OR:

  • To configure the AV8OR to receive external traffic data, perform the following steps:
  •  If the Weather Source is set to Serial, it must be changed to From the Aviation Main Menu, tap the traffic_settings.gif soft key to open the System Setup Menu.
  •  Highlight the Device Setup option and tap the SELECT soft key to show the Device and Port Setup page.
  • The AV8OR must be set up so that the position Port is configured as “Serial” or “BlueTooth”. The Type must be set as “ZAON Traffic”.
  • On the Device and Port Setup page, the configuration steps are:
    •  either BlueTooth or None as only one serial port is available.
    • On the Traffic row, set Port to “Serial” or to “BlueTooth” if using the BlueTooth module.
    •  On the Traffic row, set Type to “ZAON Traffic”.
    • Tap on the SAVE & EXIT soft key to save changes.

When finishedthe Device and Port Setup page should look like the figure below.

Use the Honeywell RS-232connector (PN 005-037-02-0017 available at www.bendixking.com/av8or) to connectthe Zaon XRX to the mini USB port on the AV8OR.

HARDWARE ACCESSORY

The AV8OR unit interfaces to the Zaon XRX traffic receiver. The traffic receiver is used to receive the traffic information which is then displayed on the screen.

See Chapter 7 "Connection to An External Traffic Source" Section 2 for the direction on how to connect AV8OR to a traffic receiver.

When XRX is set up so that the detection envelope is within a 6NM radius and +/- 2500 ft altitude of the aircraft.

When the XRX is configured correctly and AV8OR is receiving traffic information from the traffic receiver, a blue traffic icon is displayed on the Status window in the left bottom corner of the Map page.

If AV8OR is configured correctly and does not receive traffic information from the XRX, a caution popup window shows on the Traffic page.

 FIELDS ON THE TRAFFIC PAGE:

traffic_alerts.gif Traffic Alerts targets show as a solid yellow circle. Traffic alerts are used for targets within 0.7NM range and within 700 ft of the same altitude.
traffic_advisories.gif
Traffic Advisories  targets show as a white diamond icon. Traffic advisories are used for targets outside the Traffic Alerts zone and within 2.0NM and 100 ft altitude.

Other targets show as a black diamond with a white border. The black diamond is used for targets that are outside the Traffic Alerts zone and the Traffic Advisories zone.
traffic_altitude.gif The altitude of traffic target is shown above the target symbol if the aircraft is above own aircraft altitude.  Altitude of traffic target is shown below the target symbol if the aircraft is above own aircraft altitude.
traffic_down.giftraffic_trend_up.gif A vertical trend is shown with a down arrow to the right of the target symbol ifaltitude trend down is 500 ft/min or greater. The Altitude trend is shown withan up arrow to the right of the target symbol if altitude trend up is 500ft/min or greater.

TRAFFIC SETUP

Tap the TRAFFIC SETUP soft key on the Traffic page to change the setupsettings as shown in the following figure.

Tap the OK soft key to accept the change and return to the Traffic page.

Tap the CANCEL soft key to cancel the change and return to the Traffic page.

When the Traffic Alerts Pop-up is enabled, AV8OR displays the Traffic page whenever an alert is given.

A traffic alert symbol traffic_icon_2.gif is also displayed in the Status window. "ALRT" flashes on and off to draw attention to the Traffic Alert.

To disable pop-up traffic, do the following steps:

Tap the DISABLE POP-UP soft key to display the following pop up window, as shown in the following figure.

Must-Read Information

Please read the important general integration notes as well as these AV8OR-specific notes to help you get the best performance from your XRX investment.

  • XRX contains a solid state compass to help your AV8OR properly orientate the traffic on your screen. Careful consideration should be taken when using the XRX near the XM antenna which contains a magnet.  Place the XM antenna as far as possible from your XRX.  Compass calibration instructions can be found in your XRX Owner’s Manual.
  • Traffic alerts will not be shown on your AV8OR if your ground speed is less than 30 KTS.
  • Traffic input from XRX cannot be shared with TIS input. Connecting any other RS-232 device to the AV8OR  while connected to XRX will result in overlaps in signals and errors from both data sources. However, XRX does not use AV8OR.
  • Zaon highly recommends using the voice alerts from the AV8OR in place of the XRX voice alerts when viewing traffic on the AV8OR display. Alert thresholds are different between the two units, and the XRX voice alerts may not be in sync with the pop-up alerts on the AV8OR.
  • The AV8OR interface hardware is specific to the AV8OR only. Do not attempt to interface with any other device using these instructions or hardware.
