RMS-logo.GIFSee what you've been missing! Get traffic information with RMS Technology's Vista moving map. Vista operates on most laptops as well as computers designed for cockpit use, and Windows XP/Windows Vista/7 (32-bit and 64-bit versions).

Vista has made moving map software accurate, inexpensive, and truly easy to use. Simply use a serial cable connector to interface the Vista software with the XRX and enjoy continuous and accurate traffic.

To connect

To connect Vista Moving Map to the Zaon PCAS unit, first connect a cable from the Zaon unit to the computer - you will probably need a cable with a male DB-9 serial connector on one end and a USB connection on the other (these are commonly available at computer stores for about $15).

There is one setting to make in Vista.  Click on the Utilities menu and choose Program Settings.  When the box appears, look on the right side for the box labeled “Zaon PCAS (Traffic Avoidance).”  In this box select the correct serial port.

In operation the status bar at the top of the screen (below the menus and toolbar buttons) will show “Zaon OK” when connected, or “Zaon NONE” if there is no signal from the PCAS unit (eg, if the cable is unplugged).

What you see

RMS-screenshot2.png

When traffic is detected, the program will show a diamond mark is its APPROXIMATE location with an arc-shaped region around the diamond (a “brake pad”) - the detected traffic is located in this arc.  Next to the diamond the program will show the relative altitude in hundreds of feet (eg, +08 means the traffic is APPROXIMATELY 800 feet above you and -12 means it is APPROXIMATELY 1200 feet below).  An up arrow will show if the traffic is climbing and a down arrow will show if it is descending.

The diamonds will be filled (“solid”) if the traffic is above you and descending, or below you and climbing.

The diamonds will show in red if the traffic is within 1 nautical mile of your location or within 100 feet of your current altitude.

Requirements

The minimum requirements are needed to show traffic:

  • Any XRX
  • Any laptop as well as  any computer designed for cockpit use
  • Vista moving map software
  • Cable with a male DB-9 serial connector on one end and a USB connection on the othe
