pca-products.jpg logo-pcavionics.pngSee what you've been missing! Get traffic information on your PCAvionics MountainScope system straight from your XRX. Zaon and PCAvionics have teamed up to provide highly-accurate traffic information for the MountainScope PDA and tablet-based moving map and weather systems.

bluetooth.gif Hooking up an XRX to MountainScope is simple and easy. An available Bluetooth device enables your XRX to send traffic wirelessly to the MountainScope device. Or, a serial cable is available for devices that may not have an available Bluetooth channel.

What you see

pca-screen.jpg
Increase your Traffic IQ

With an XRX system providing traffic, MountainScope displays traffic position information by placing an outline of the traffic area directly on the moving map display. The traffic's relative altitude is also displayed in the middle of the outline. For example, an aircraft 500 feet below your altitude would be displayed as -5. The climb or descend trend is also displayed as either an up or down arrow.

The color of the outline changes from yellow to orange to red as traffic becomes more of a threat.

How to hook it up

Wireless Simplicity

To make hookup as painless as possible, a Bluetooth module is available from Zaon and MountainScope that sends XRX information wirelessly to any Bluetooth-enabled device, including PDAs and tablets.

Alternately, a connection can be made via a serial-to-USB cable, or a standard serial cable, depending on the particular platform on which the MountainScope software is running.

Requirements

These minimum requirements are needed to show traffic:

  • XRX with any version of software
  • MountainScope running traffic plug-in
  • Zaon Bluetooth module or appropriate cable
NOTE: PDAs can only support two Bluetooth links simultaneously. Therefore if your GPS is wired and your XM unit is Bluetooth, then you can purchase the Zaon Bluetooth module. However, if your GPS and XM unit are Bluetooth, you must use a serial or serial-to-USB cable (for tablets).

Setup Guide

XRX Step-by-Step Setup

  1. To get the best performance, ensure all interface cables are properly connected and XRX is positioned  for maximum detection. See “Placement Considerations” in your XRX Owner’s Manual.
  2. Calibrate your XRX compass. See “Compass Calibration” in your XRX Owner’s Manual.
  3. Use the Com menu to select "Profile 2" (or "True Flight" on older XRX units) as the output method.
  4. Data connection:
    1. If using the Bluetooth kit, turn the unit off and connect Bluetooth module to XRX data port
    2. If using a serial cable, turn the unit off and connect cable to XRX data port

Maximize Detection Window

  1. Using the Alt and Range menus to set detection range to 6NM and altitude to ±2500 feet
  2. Press mute to return to the traffic screen. The screen will only show “Profile 2” (or "True Flight"), but all menu options will still be available by pressing the menu button again at any time.

MountainScopeStep-by-Step Setup

  1. Connect XRX to PDA or tablet via Bluetooth
  2. For Bluetooth conenctions, determine the COM port setting the XRX information is using (for tablets, use the Device Manager > Ports). For PDAs, use the Bluetooth Manager.
  3. Download and install the traffic software plug-in.
  4. In MountainScope, select the Sim/GPS Menu button. Select "Settings". From the submenu, select the COM port determined in step 2. Once selected, a settings box will appear.
  5. At the "Input as..." drop-down box, select "TrafficScope". Click "OK" to exit settings.
When interfacing with a third-party system, XRX will not display any traffic information on the built-in screen, only which COM profile you have selected. This is done to free up processing time for more efficient traffic detection. However, all button functions work as normal, and you can even switch to a COM setting of "NONE" to temporarily see traffic on the XRX.
